You’re Perfect for the Job

In the bible, Samuel tells us a story about how God found the first king to rule over His people. God instructed Samuel to call on a man named Jesse who had many sons, strapping young men who would fit all of the qualifications for the making of a king. (I Samuel 1)

He asked Jesse to line up all of his sons so that God could tell him which one would become the king.

When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Jesse’s son, Eliab and thought, “Here he is! God’s anointed!” (I Samuel 6)

But God told Samuel, “Looks aren’t everything. Don’t be impressed with his looks and stature. I’ve already eliminated him. God judges persons differently than humans do. Men and women look at the face; GOD looks into the heart.” (I Samuel 7)

Verse eight goes on to tell us that Jesse presented several of his sons to Samuel but Samuel knew that even though they had all of the right qualifications, they weren’t the one that God had chosen to be king.

But there was one son missing – David wasn’t even in the line-up. He was in the back forty with the sheep – completely overlooked.

In verse 12, Samuel took one look at David and God said, “Up on your feet! Anoint him! This is the one.”

Samuel took his flask of oil and anointed him, with his brothers standing around watching. The Spirit of GOD entered David like a rush of wind, God vitally empowering him for the rest of his life. (1 Samuel 13)

Many times we forget that God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called.

We might feel insignificant and under qualified to do a mighty work for God.

David wasn’t the tallest, most handsome or the one with the biggest muscles. He was completely overlooked, not even invited to the line-up of sons.

But God saw through the row of physically qualified young men, over the hills past the forest to a small field where one under-qualified boy sat with the sheep. That’s who He chose to be the king!

No matter what your stature, no matter what your level of physical, mental or emotional qualifications may or may not be, you have a purpose that is bigger than you so that you won’t rely solely on your own efforts. You have a mighty purpose.

Don’t be afraid of what you don’t have. Give God what you do have and He will use it for His glory.

If you have felt over looked and under qualified, congratulations!

You’re perfect for the job!
